You know what nobody loves about traveling? Packing.
Your luggage is a necessary part of any vacation or trip, but getting it there can be more stressful than you might realize at first. This is even more true if you have children, as you need to think about their needs on top of your own.
How can you plan to pack properly for any trip?
Get the Right Bag
First things first, you need the right bag for whatever trip you’re going on. This might not seem all that important, but when you try to take a suitcase on a camping trip for the first time, you realize why the right bag matters so much.
The bag you use should be appropriate for the trip you’re going on. On a weekend away, you might be able to get away with a small carry-on bag or backpack, but longer vacations will need a larger bag. If you traveling with kids you may want to consider letting them have their own kids' size luggage set.
Ideally, your bag or suitcase should be sturdy enough to withstand the rigors of travel and protect your belongings. It also needs to be lightweight. Some bags are designed to help you organize your stuff, and these are very handy to have, especially if they include a method of compressing your clothing and saving space.
Think about what souvenirs you are planning to bring home. For example, it you are visiting a wine country and plan on traveling back with wine, you will want to bring a travel wine case.
You should also consider your children and their needs. For example, if you have small children, a stroller travel bag will be useful for protecting and carrying their stroller around the airport and during the flight.
Your Packing Checklist
You also need to make sure that you pack the right stuff.
Again, the kind of trip you go on will change what you pack. A winter wonderland skiing adventure needs vastly different clothing than a relaxed and luxurious beach trip. You need to think about the weather and what you’ll be doing. Will you be walking a lot or relaxing? Do you plan on eating out and dressing up, or can you leave the nice dresses and suits at home?
But when it comes down to it, every basic packing checklist comes down to the same things:
First, your medication. If you’re traveling for a long time, think about ensuring that you have enough of your prescription medication. It might also be a good idea to check that you can travel with certain controlled medications without declaring them.
Next, your toiletries and other personal care items. If you’re likely to have your period, you will need supplies. The same goes for toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, makeup, shampoo, and so on. Again, your care and grooming items might differ, but think about what you use everyday.
Of course, you also need to consider your clothes. An extra pair of underwear never hurts, but try not to go crazy about overpacking. Remember that you can wash and re-wear clothes.
Finally, you need to think about how to pack your electronics and other sensitive, valuable, and breakable items. A specialized carrying bag is never a bad idea, especially if you can also carry any ID’s, your wallet, and other documentation with them.
