Planning a Florida family vacation and trying to decide between St. Pete and Clearwater Beach? Both are gorgeous Gulf Coast destinations with powdery white sand, calm waters, and endless family-friendly activities, but they offer very different vibes. I’ve done the legwork for you (you’re welcome!) to help you choose the best beach for your crew!

As a family, we go visit Florida every year and love this area off the Gulf Coast. So, let’s compare St. Pete vs Clearwater Beach to see what makes them unique, and which one is a better fit for your family.

What Clearwater Beach Offers Families

If your dream family getaway involves staying right on a bustling beach with tons of activities at your fingertips, Clearwater Beach might be your jam. Clearwater Beach, Florida, is a dreamy family destination that has everything you need for the ultimate beach vacation with kids. Think soft, sugar-white sand, calm turquoise waters, and endless sunshine, basically a kid-friendly paradise!

Clearwater Beaches

Voted one of the best beaches in the U.S. year after year, Clearwater Beach is famous for its soft white sand and calm, shallow waters, which is perfect for little ones. The wide, flat beach makes it easy to set up camp for the day, and the shallow, gentle waves are perfect for little ones to splash and play safely. Bring your sand toys and build castles, hunt for seashells, or just relax while the kids run free. There’s plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the Gulf breeze.

Sand Key Park is just a short drive from the bustling Clearwater strip, but it feels like a peaceful escape. It is spacious and far less crowded than Clearwater Beach, so you’ll have plenty of room to spread out, build sandcastles, and enjoy a relaxed beach day without feeling like you’re in the middle of a party. Plus, Sand Key is one of the best spots for shell collecting.

Clear Water Family Activities

Clearwater Beach isn’t just about the sand and sea (although we wouldn’t blame you if you stayed there all day). You’ll also find plenty of fun family-friendly activities including many teen-friendly fun.

Pier 60 Fun turns into a festival every evening with street performers, live music, and vendors. Trust me, the kids will love it!

Water Activities, like dolphin-watching and whale-watching cruises, jet skiing, and paddleboarding are big here.

At Clearwater Marine Aquarium, you can meet Winter the dolphin, the famous star of Dolphin Tale! This aquarium focuses on rescue and rehabilitation, making it a feel-good educational stop for your family.

Set sail on a swashbuckling adventure Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise where kids can dress up, play pirate games, and enjoy treasure hunts aboard a real pirate ship.

Family-Friendly Hotels

There a ton of great hotels for families in Clearwater. Many hotels are steps from the beach, making it easy for those midday naps. We love the Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach for its beachfront location and pool with a view!

Why Families Love It

The best part? Everything is walkable! Clearwater Beach’s laid-back vibe and small-town charm make it easy to explore with kids. Whether you’re watching the sunset at Pier 60 or spotting dolphins in the distance, there’s always something magical waiting for your family.

Clearwater Beach is lively, family-friendly, and full of action. This is a busier beach, making it very popular for teens. If you like to stay where the fun is, or you have teenagers, this is your spot!

What St. Pete Beach Offers Families

St. Pete offers a more laid-back, artsy vibe that’s perfect for families who want a mix of beach time and cultural experiences. I'll be honest, we love visiting St. Pete Beach, and we visit every year.

Beaches

While the sand may be slightly less famous than Clearwater’s, St. Pete Beach is still stunning. The sand is soft, and brilliant white, while the ocean is warm and clear. We usually enjoy hanging out all day at the beach off Tradewinds Island Grand or RumFish Beach, but every beach we've visited is awesome.

For example Treasure Island the beach is HUGE. There’s plenty of space to spread out, build sandcastles, and let the kids run around without bumping into strangers. The sand is super soft, and the Gulf waters are calm, shallow, and perfect for little swimmers. It’s less touristy than places like Clearwater, so you don’t feel overwhelmed by crowds. Families can enjoy a peaceful beach day while still having access to everything you need

Pass-a-Grille Beach is a charming, old-school Florida beach that’s peaceful and packed with character. This laid-back spot at the southern tip of St. Pete Beach feels like a step back in time. You’ve got cute local shops, beachside cafes, and ice cream spots all within a few blocks of the beach. It’s easy to park the car and just explore on foot.

St. Pete Family Activities

St. Pete Beach has a ton of family activities to keep the kiddos happy throughout your Florida family vacation. Overall, St. Pete is more laid-back and artsy, but it does have a cool city center if you need a little more excitement.

Here’s where it gets fun! Downtown St. Pete is packed with colorful murals, local shops, and family-friendly museums like the Great Explorations Children’s Museum and The Dalí Museum. It is also where you go if you want to catch a fun sporting event.

Take a pirate ship adventure along John's Pass. Take in the views and bottomless beer and wine, while the kids are entertained with water-gun battles, face painting, treasure hunts, and more.

St. Pete Beach Family Hotels

We always enjoy all the family activities, crafts, shows, and more that come with staying at the Tradewinds and other family resorts in St. Pete. There are pools, waterslides, kid's clubs, live music and so much more to enjoy when you stay at one of these resorts.

Family Restaurants in St. Pete

Good eats is not an issue in St. Pete. There are plethora great restaurants. Unlike the tourist-heavy spots in Clearwater, St. Pete’s dining scene feels more local. Grab fresh seafood or some authentic Italian at your fingertips. Check out our full list of our favorite family restaurants in St. Pete for more details.

St. Pete Beach or Clearwater Beach, which one is best for your family? Honestly, you can’t go wrong with either one. Both offer that laid-back Florida charm that families love. And since they’re only about 30 minutes apart, why not explore both? You can even take the Suncoast Trolly and spend a in each and enjoy the best of both worlds!
